For the Spring 2011 semester, Dr. Claudia Parvanta, professor and chairperson of behavioral and social sciences, and the Dorrance H. Hamilton Media Commons at WHYY partnered to develop a special course for undergraduate and graduate students to learn about health communication and produce public service announcements about important health topics.

The students came to the Public Media Commons for five sessions, learning video production. They wrote, shot, acted, and edited their own public service announcements which inlcuded:

  • Cyberbullying
  • Eating Disorders
  • Underage Drinking
  • Elderly Medication
  • Get Into It
  • Hang Up the Keys
  • Think Pink, Go Green!

Busy day, NEW COURSE, and a break

Yesterday broke foggy and cold in Oxford which was actually very nice. It brought back so many memories of my own days as a student here, making my way into town for a day in the Oriental Institute researching and occasionally writing. This day I took my DSLR, looking every bit the tourist, and captured what I hope will be some nice shots of the colleges through the fog. I wont be able to upload those photos until I get home, but I also had my point-and-shoot and have a few to share. It is a visual cliché, but Christ Church really is such a beautiful college, how could I not?

As the day warmed up the weather cleared leaving the sky crystal clear. I headed over to Mansfield College at 10 am to begin a day full of activity. Scholar and PLA student Kaitlyn Randol met me at their student accommodations and showed me around. Why? Because

We are developing a new study abroad opportunity for our incoming first year students! T

Mercy Philadelphia Hospital and the Physical Therapy Department at University of the Sciences have always had a strong partnership through the Mercy/USciences Clinic for the uninsured and in the classroom teaching. So, it was no surprise that a group offive eager USciences PT students and alumni including current Mercy PT Rich DiGiacomo traveled to the beach to helpmotivated individuals with varying disabilities spend an awesome summer day surfing in Wildwood, NJ, on June 18. “They Will Surf Again” is a nation-wide event part of the “Life Rolls On” foundation, an organization promoting sports for individuals with spinal cord injuries.

Freiburg and home

This morning I am on a train headed to Frankfurt to catch my flight home. I have thoroughly enjoyed the last two days, but I have been busy! The propose of this trip was to meet with our colleagues at the Albert-Luswigs-Universität Freiburg to discuss future joint programs and the development of an honors-type program. The schedule kept me moving from the moment I landed in Basel to late each night.

Wonderful Hindbeernkuchen I had for lunch when I arrived. O! So good!

The last time I was in Germany, other than in an airport flying through, was in 1988. I had taken a year off from college between my freshman and sophomore years and attended a Goethe Institut in Schwäbisch Hall, not terribly far from Freiburg. One of my great regrets is that I have never become fully fluent in German and it has been too long. I was surprised, however, at how much I did remember. Cou

Conduct Becoming a Scholar

Dear Schreyer Scholars, You are all of course well aware that this Saturday has been declared State Pattys Day and that debate continues within our community about its propriety. Reasonable concerns have been raised on a number of issues from students safety to the importance of simply being a good neighbor. I do not want to be infantilizing by stating the obvious: you are all adults (even if many of you are not yet of the legal drinking age) and you are free to make your own decisions regarding how you spend your weekends. It is certainly my hope that whatever your activities you remain safe and would bring no disrepute to yourself or to our institution. That being said, I wanted to remind you that as Schreyer Scholars you are held to a particularly high standard in terms of both your academic and personal conduct. This means that inappropriate actions may have far more severe consequences for yourself than they would have for other Penn State students. These guidelines are found on page 6 of the student handbook () and the relevant passage is below. Read more…
