Matt Brezina is a Schreyer Scholar graduate, a member of our External Advisory Board member, founder of Xobni and now Postagram. Oh, and a real mensch! He has some very interesting thoughts about how to become an entrepreneur. For those not familiar with Y Combinator start at their site:
I’ve always been interested in starting companies. Ten years ago I was an undergrad at Penn State. I was told by professors, my parents & the press that the best way to start a company was to go to graduate school, become an expert in your field and start a company with a classmate. Ten years ago grad school probably was the best place to meet potential co-founders. That’s what Larry and Sergey did. That is how Filo and Jerry met.
So I went to grad school.
I did not love my time stuck in the dark corners of the control systems lab at the University of Maryland. The opportunities to evaluate and work with potential co-founders were lacking. Note* I realize this concentration would have been higher at a place like Stanford or MIT. Luckily

The region’s top student-scientists will be competing for major scholarship money at the Delaware Valley Science Fairs, the “Olympics of Science Fairs,” which will be held Wednesday, April 6 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks,
The event features students in grades 6-12 who have completed science or engineering research projects and have advanced after competing in their local fairs. These bright students are competing at the regional level with the hopes of making it to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in May.
Like the Olympics, the stakes are high for students – nearly $1 million in scholarship and prize money will be awarded at the Delaware Valley Science Fairs (www.dvsf.org). Past winning research projects include rocket engineering, green buildings, breast cancer research and seismic faults. There ar
The Friends of USP held its annual Open House on February 25. The organization, formerly known as the Women’s Club, is marking its 82nd birthday (founded in February 1929). While another name change is looming in the future – to Friends of USciences, the group continues to promote activities that emphasize the administration of funds to benefit students.
Founded by a group of dedicated women who bonded to form the Women’s Club, their goal was to promote by cooperative effort the interest of the University through social contacts, student service, and cultural activities. They realized that the increasing cost of obtaining a college education was a real drain to the resources of our students and their families – then as it is now. Their efforts to render student service through increased scholarship aid received special attention.

At the request of the Schreyer family, I am extending an invitation to Schreyer Scholars to attend a Memorial Mass being held for William A. Schreyer today, Sunday, March 20, at 2:00 p.m. in the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center here on campus. A general announcement about the service has been released on Penn State Live at http://live.psu.edu/story/51947. As you know, Mr. Schreyer, who passed away in January at the age of 83, and his wife, Joan, gave a $30 million landmark gift to Penn State for the founding of this college in 1997. The Schreyers continued their support of the college with an additional $25 million commitment in 2006. This service will be a celebration of Mr. Schreyer’s life and legacy. He was a most enthusiastic and visionary supporter of the university and this college. As a Schreyer Scholar, you are living proof of his foresight into the myriad ways education and opportunity can transform the lives of people who will shape the world. I h
