The news to come out of Florida from the Coaches Convention/League Meetings was pretty bland this year, especially considering it was a rule change year.

The big news was that it now looks likely that college hockey will be making the move from full face shields to visors. I’m not a huge fan of the move, but I’m fine with it as long as we’re all honest about the true reason for this move, which is to have college hockey players look like the players in every other league. The notion that it improves safety by taking away safety measure is downright silly. If it makes things safer, why does every player with a facial injury play with a full cage instead of no facial protection?

In other news, this paragraph made me want to cut myself:

The exact makeup of the board is still being haggled over. In one incarnation, it would involve the commissioners, three coaches and three athletic directors, comprising the six conferences that will be playing as of 2013-14. In another, it will be one commissioner and six athletic directors.

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Nursing and the Health Sciences Center of Cisco College in Abilene have teamed up to revitalize a program designed to help licensed vocational nurses pursue an associate degree.

The Texas Board of Nursing withdrew approval for Cisco College’s Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program in January because of student passing rates, though students currently enrolled in the program were allowed to sit for the national nursing licensure examination after graduation in May.

“We had 50-plus students who needed one more semester to finish,” said Annette Smith, dean of instruction at Cisco. “The board allowed us, because we had instructors in place who had been working with them and were committed to finishing out the year with them, to continue to teach them for one more semester.”

The decision to shutter Cisco’s previous program was made after fewer than 80 percent of first-time-test-takers failed to pass the licensure examination over a three-year period.

The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year and will begin its quest for a return trip to the Final Four on Saturday at North Carolina (5:30 p.m., ESPNU). The Tar Heels (11-5) are seeded No. 8 overall; the Pioneers (8-6) are one of eight unseeded teams that begin on the road.

Saturday’s winner will advance to the May 19 quarterfinals and play No. 1 Loyola (14-1) or Canisius (6-7) in Annapolis, Md. The Final Four is May 26-28 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

“We weren’t sure we were in, so it’s exciting and a relief,” DU coach Bill Tierney said after watching the selection show Sunday night. “As far as playing Carolina goes, they’re one of the country’s most talented teams, and they play in the ACC. They had a great year. We scrimmaged them (to a tie) in February and we know how athletic they are.

Even some in high performing schools ion the leafier suburbs are struggling, Dr Liz Sidwell, the Government’s Schools Commissioner, told a conference in London today.

Dr Sidwell, whose job means she advises ministers on tackling under-performance and its flagship academies programme, warned that one of the biggest problems was parents just not getting out of bed in the morning to send their children off to school.

“If your parents are lying in bed and don’t go to work, it is very difficult to get the children up on time” she said. “This

An embattled Brooklyn charter school facing closure will be allowed to continue registering new students for the 2012-2013 school year for at least the next couple weeks, a judged ruled this afternoon.

Even though the city wants it closed, Williamsburg Charter High School has already registered 60 students for next year, the schools lawyer, Ellen Eagen, said at a New York State Supreme Court hearing today. The hearing was to determine whether or not to extend a temporary restraining order against the Department of Educations plans to close the school.

The temporary restraining order allowed the school to hold a lottery on April 30 and begin formally accepting students who have been selected. Had the restraining order expired, the school would not have been able to register any more of the 200 students who applied.

Eagen argued in court that the extension was crucial to the schools recruiting and admission efforts for next year in the event that the school receives a favorable ruling and is allowed to stay open.

Students we interviewed reported that “Bulldog” football is a key component of autumn on the Yale University campus, and the Harvard-Yale rivalry (known as “The Game”) is considered one of the most important face-offs on each season’s schedule. Since 1875, The Game has been played nearly every November at the end of the football season. Because the event alternates between the Harvard and Yale venues each year, SOM students will have the opportunity to attend The Game at the Yale Bowl at least once during their time at the school. However, given the two schools’ proximity to each other, we expect that travelling to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to attend The Game at Harvard is worth considering.

Graduate students pay student pricing for most athletic events and sit in the student section. The Yale Bowl is only about a mile and a half from campus, and students often walk to the event together in “caravans” after tailgating in the parking lot. The Game brings both the universities and their business schools together. One second-year

In the third quarter of the 2012 4A state girls championship game, Mercedes Riggs dribbled to the right side, crossed over, stepped back, and drilled a 3-pointer to give Timpanogos a late 13-point lead over Springville.

It was, her father said, the defining image of his daughter’s high school basketball career.

“That and the look of determination she had,” Bill Riggs said. “You could tell she was not going to be denied, and she played that way.”

It’s also one of a multitude of reasons why the Daily Herald has named Mercedes Riggs as the 2012 Valley Player of the Year for girls basketball.

The senior guard’s success might not have happened at all were it not for a decision made during her freshman year.

Riggs found herself torn between basketball and the martial arts. She had already invested much of her life in both, having played club basketball up to that point while also earning a first-degree black belt in taekwondo.

Her mother, Anita, was convinced at one point that Mercedes would break away from the hardcourt tradition established by her mother and followed by her three older sisters.

“We knew that she had the talent and the work ethic [for basketball],” Anita said. “It was going to

Kandell Scruggs (from left) emergency medical technology instructor, demonstrates a technique to students Macy Kramer and Matthew Buckley during lab at TSTC Friday. The TSTC paramedic program recently earned national accreditation. Nellie Doneva/Reporter-News

Texas State Technical College-West Texas is the first school in West Texas to earn a critical accreditation.

Officials were notified in early March that the school had earned accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs for its emergency medical technician-paramedic program. According to recently approved rules, such accreditation must be in place by Jan. 1, 2013.

Failure to receive the accreditation would have forced termination of the paramedic program, said Andy Weaver, program director for the Emergency Medical Services program at TSTC.

Current students would have been allowed to complete the program, but new students would not be allowed to enroll.

It was announced today that the Minnesota Wild have signed University of Denver sophomore Jason Zucker to an entry level contract. Zucker’s signing was pretty much a foregone conclusion after the Wild made it quite clear that signing him was a top priority this summer.

In other signing news:

It’s not an early departure, but the Washington Capitals signed Miami graduating senior defenseman Cameron Schilling to a free agent contract. Schilling put together an incredibly solid career at Miami, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him playing for the Caps sometime in the future.

Western Michigan defenseman Dan DeKeyser was considered one of the top free agents in college hockey, but announced yesterday that he would be returning to Kalamazoo for another season.

Minnesota-Duluth’s JT Brown is another top free agent prospect drawing interest from nearly every NHL team and has reportedly trimmed his list of teams he’s looking at to Boston, Philadelphia, and Tampa Bay.

A teacher at a prestigious independent school has died following a skiing accident in the French Alps, the school said today.

Ed How, a chemistry teacher at Charterhouse school in Godalming, Surrey, is understood to have fallen 200 metres down cliffs while going off-piste at Val D’Isere yesterday.

A spokeswoman for Charterhouse said: “The School learnt yesterday that one of its teachers, Ed How, had been killed in a skiing accident while on holiday with his family.

“Ed was 37, married with a baby. He was very popular, and an outstanding and highly respected teacher (Chemistry) and sportsman.

“This is a great shock to the school and our thoughts and prayers are with Ed’s family.”

Mr How is the second Briton in two weeks to die at the French resort.

Thomas Lynch, 22, from Leicestershire, also died following a skiing accident there last week.

A MOOC is not for credit, its for (networked) learning. You participate in a MOOC because you want to learn about a particular topic or subject. A MOOC is an alternative (attractive?) mode of learning in a flat, technologically interconnected world and supports life-long networked learning.

A MOOC is similar to the traditional courses that we think about when looking at learning and education: it has facilitators, students, resources, start and end date, etc, but its about connecting and collaborating.

Watch the video and have David explain better, and fully.

It used to be that if you wanted to know about something you could do a few things: you could ask someone, you could buy a book, you could try to figure it out for yourself, or you could call a school. If that school offered that course in that thing you were trying to figure out, you could go there and take it.
