Thomas Metthe/Reporter-News McMurrys Alaisha Guerra (right) rounds the turn on the final lap of the womens 1,500 m run on her way to third-place finish at the 2010 American Southwest Conference Championships in April at the Hardin-Simmons Track and Field Complex. Guerra graduates Saturday with a degree in business.

For Alaisha Guerra, cross-country runner and soon-to-be McMurry University graduate, there’s nothing like the end of a race.

“Your body is drained, your mouth is dry, you feel like you’re about to fall over,” Guerra said, as if describing a warm bubble bath.

Schools may ban calculators

Primary school pupils could be banned from using calculators until they have learned basic sums, ministers said, amid concerns that an over-reliance on the devices is damaging children’s arithmetic.

Nick Gibb, the Schools minister, suggested calculators should only be used once a child masters basic maths.

Figures show 18 per cent of pupils in England aged from seven to 11 failed to make the progress expected of them in maths.

NEW YORK—Former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky said he never spoke with Joe Paterno about any suspected misconduct with minors, the New York Times reported Saturday.

Sandusky has been charged with 40 counts of molesting eight boys over 15 years and is free on bail while awaiting a preliminary hearing Dec. 13. A grand jury investigating Sandusky said in a report that some of the allegations occurred in the team showers, including a 2002 allegation in which a graduate assistant testified he saw Sandusky assaulting a young boy.

University trustees fired Paterno on Nov. 9, four days after charges were filed against Sandusky, amid mounting pressure that school leaders should have done more to prevent alleged abuse.

During a lengthy interview at his lawyer’s home, Sandusky in an interview with the Times painted a picture of chaotic but friendly scenes involving children he described as extended family at his State College, Pa., home. The descriptions sharply contrast the shocking allegations involving children outlined in a grand jury report. <

Semifinals info

This year, all CIF-Southern Section football semifinals are scheduled for Friday (Dec. 2). The CIF-Southern Section football coaches advisory committee requested that all semis be played on Friday, so that teams that advance to the finals would have equal preparation time for the finals.

Here is what we have this morning about semifinals sites, etc.

Pac-5 Division

Santa Margarita (10-2) vs. Mission Viejo (10-2). Missions home game. This one is likely to stay at Mission Viejo High.

San Clemente (11-1) vs. Tesoro (8-4). Tesoros home game. Tesoro probably will move this game to Orange Coast College for Saturday, Dec. 3, Tesoro coach Brian Barnes said this morning. If you thought that Barnes was taking a big gamble by moving the Titans game against Servite from Tesoros on-campus stadium to OCC, raise your hand (yes, my hand is raised).
